Details
Lakhaon Pol Srey (The Story of Phat Seyma) is a rare and powerful form of Cambodian dance-drama performed exclusively by women, bringing a timeless Khmer legend to life through masked performance and rhythmic storytelling.
Lakhaon Pol Srey, literally meaning “the theatre where women speak”, is a distinctive and now rare Cambodian performance art traditionally staged by female performers only.
Using masks, stylised movement and sung narration, it presents epic stories passed down orally through generations, notably in the village of Kien Svay Krau. This performance features the Pol Srey troupe from Wat Kien Svay Krau pagoda.
The story follows a young girl abandoned in the forest, saved from danger and raised by a hermit who names her Phat Seyma. Her fate intertwines with that of a young giant who, drawn by her presence, seeks protection rather than harm. It is a tale of loss, survival and unexpected guardianship.
Outdoor performance.
